CITIZEN JANE
Citizen Jane: Battle for the City is the feature-length documentary directed by Matt Tyrnauer about Jane Jacobs, the urbanist and activist who upended urban planning in 1960s New York by challenging the very concept of what a city is and should be. Her celebrated book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, based on her personal research and exploration of cities and failed urban renewal projects, shook the establishment at a time when American cities were being re-designed and reshaped by modernist plans and urban renewal. When master planner Robert Moses revived a plan to run a freeway through her neighborhood around Washington Square, the battle became personal. Citizen Jane premiered at TIFF 2016 and screened at DOC NYC 2016 and IDFA 2016. The film was released theatrically by IFC Films/Sundance Selects and Dogwoof, and is streaming on Amazon Prime.
